Clocks: Then & Now

It is a shame that the Stonehenge cannot be named as an astronomical timepiece; if it could it would be added to the myriad forms of clocks. Stonehenge is an architectural wonder with enough designs of clocks that can fill an entire gallery. Take a look at a few of these magnificent clocks; past and present.

Egyptians are very intelligent and artistically gifted. Many achievements are attributed to the Egyptians even in the prehistoric time period. One of the biggest discoveries attributed to the Egyptians is time. In history the Egyptians were known as stone masters and it would only be natural that their inventions would be stone based. With the inventions of the sundial it has made time possible. The sundial faces the east and is constructed as a simple t-square. The sundial works with the sun, the time is told by the setting of the sun.

are known for their interesting sounds which often resembles that of a bird whistle during the specific times of striking.

Time would be very difficult to tell is the elements were not available that we rely on. Clock designs would take on a different shape. The Clepsydra or better known as the water clock was given to people from the Egyptians is widely use in Europe. The Clepsydra is used in Greece more than any where else because there are still ships that continue to use it. There are historical records that have proven that Plato created the first alarm clock. The clepsydra holds several lead balls. The lead balls enter the basin when the vessel is filled.

During the renaissance age or the age of discovery the clepsydra was a ridiculous item that was to be placed in the overcrowded quarters of a ship. So in order to fill the need to tell time the hourglass was discovered and it met the need to tell time. Hourglasses have overtaken the popularity of the timepiece leaving behind the sundial, obelisks, and the clepsydras. The hourglass is one of the best discoveries that have been created for the astronomy, cartography, and time.

Clocks have been affected by astronomy. Astrolabe and Orrery are both timepieces that became traditional mechanical clock designs.

Mechanical clocks are the new trend of the modern day era. They are available in a variety of designs including everything from one hand devices to devices with several spans of astrolabe. They are very much alike but also very much different. Coiled spring or a weight is more commonly found in power supplied clocks. These two components are used to give constant repetitive motion. They are also equipped with interlocking gears that control the hands or indicators of the clock which offers us the current time.

The modern day clock designs continue to be based on the fourteenth century mechanical timepieces. For example digital clocks are still manufactured with the same concept in mind.
